A Complete System, Not Just Shingles

GAF manufactures roofing materials used on more American homes than any other brand. Their products are engineered to work as a system, meaning every component from the leak barrier at your roof deck to the ridge cap shingles at the peak is designed to integrate with the layers around it. This systems approach delivers significantly better protection and longevity compared to mixing components from different manufacturers.

Whether you are dealing with an aging roof that has reached the end of its service life, storm damage that requires immediate attention, or you simply want to upgrade your home's curb appeal and energy efficiency, our team handles every aspect of the project. From initial inspection and material selection through permitting, installation, and final cleanup, we manage the entire process.

Anatomy of a GAF Roofing System

A high-performance roof is not just shingles. It is a multi-layered system where each component serves a specific purpose. Understanding these layers helps you appreciate why a complete roofing system outperforms a shingles-only installation.

Leak Barrier

The first line of defense against water intrusion. GAF leak barriers are self-adhering membranes applied directly to your roof deck at the most vulnerable points: eaves, rakes, valleys, and around penetrations like chimneys, skylights, and vent pipes. These barriers create a waterproof seal that stops wind-driven rain and ice dam meltwater from reaching the wood structure beneath.

Roof Deck Protection

This underlayment covers the entire roof deck and provides a critical secondary layer of protection between your shingles and the wooden decking. If wind manages to lift a shingle or drive rain beneath the shingle layer, the deck protection prevents that moisture from reaching and damaging the structural wood.

Starter Strip Shingles

Installed along the eaves and rakes before the first course of shingles, starter strips feature factory-applied sealant positioned to bond with the shingles above them. This creates a secure seal at the roof's most wind-vulnerable edges, significantly reducing the risk of shingle blow-offs during high winds.

Shingles

The most visible component of your roofing system. GAF asphalt shingles are built on a sturdy fiberglass base, coated with weathering-grade asphalt, and surfaced with mineral granules that protect against UV degradation. GAF's Timberline HDZ is the number one selling shingle in North America, offering a dimensional wood-shake appearance and excellent wind resistance.

Rooftop Accessories

Specialty accessories designed to enhance the overall performance of your GAF roofing system. These include roof-to-wall flashing, pipe boot covers, and other components that address the unique details of your specific roof geometry. Every roof has penetrations and transitions that require specialized treatment.

Attic Ventilation

Proper attic ventilation directly impacts shingle longevity, energy efficiency, and structural health. A balanced system uses intake vents at the eaves and exhaust vents at the ridge to create continuous airflow, preventing heat buildup in summer and moisture condensation in winter that causes rot, mold, and ice dams.

Ridge Cap Shingles

The finishing touch that protects one of your roof's most vulnerable areas. Ridge cap shingles are specially manufactured, pre-bent shingles installed along the hip and ridge lines where two roof slopes meet. These peak areas experience the highest wind speeds and the most direct weather exposure on your entire roof.

Common Roof Terminology

Understanding basic roofing terminology helps you communicate more effectively with your contractor and make informed decisions about your project.

Ridges

The horizontal peaks where two roof slopes meet at the top. Ridge cap shingles are installed here to seal and protect this joint.

Hips

The outward diagonal joints where two sloping roof planes meet. Hip caps serve the same protective and aesthetic purpose as ridge caps.

Valleys

The inward angles where two roof slopes meet, forming a channel that directs water runoff. Valleys require extra waterproofing with leak barriers.

Eaves

The lower edges of the roof that overhang the exterior walls. Starter strips and leak barriers are critical at the eaves to prevent wind-driven rain entry.

Rakes

The exposed edges on the sides of a gable roof. Drip edge flashing is installed here to prevent water from curling back underneath the shingles.

Pitch

The measurement of a roof's steepness, expressed as a ratio of vertical rise to horizontal run. Pitch affects material selection and installation methods.

Flashing

Thin metal sheeting installed at transitions and penetrations, such as around chimneys, vents, and where the roof meets a wall, to divert water away.

Roof Decking

The wooden boards (typically plywood or OSB) that form the structural base of your roof. All other roofing components are attached to the deck.

Why We Exclusively Install GAF

Industry-Leading Products and Warranty

After evaluating every major roofing manufacturer on the market, J Palace Construction chose to work exclusively with GAF for one simple reason: no other manufacturer offers a better combination of product quality, system engineering, and warranty protection. GAF's Timberline HDZ is the number one selling shingle in North America for good reason. It delivers proven wind resistance, excellent granule adhesion, and a dimensional appearance that adds real curb appeal and resale value to your home.

The GAF Roofing System warranty structure sets them apart from the competition. When you install a GAF Lifetime Shingle along with at least three qualifying GAF accessories, your installation qualifies for a GAF Roofing System Limited Warranty that covers not just materials but the complete system.

Proven Performance Nationwide

Beyond product quality, GAF backs their system with manufacturing facilities, testing laboratories, and a commitment to innovation that smaller manufacturers simply cannot match. Their products are tested under extreme conditions and manufactured to exacting standards. When we install a GAF roof on your home, we know exactly how every component will perform because these products have been proven across millions of installations nationwide.

This integrated warranty approach reflects GAF's confidence that their products perform best when installed together as a complete system, and it gives you the peace of mind that your entire roof investment is protected for as long as you own your home.

Local Expertise

Built for Northern California's Climate

Northern California's Mediterranean climate creates unique demands on roofing materials. Summer temperatures in the Sacramento Valley and Central Valley regularly exceed 100 degrees, putting extreme thermal stress on roofing products. Winter brings periods of heavy, sustained rainfall that test waterproofing integrity. Foothill and mountain communities face additional challenges including snow loads and high winds. GAF shingles are engineered to handle these conditions, with advanced granule adhesion that resists UV degradation and asphalt formulations that maintain flexibility through temperature extremes.

Proper attic ventilation is especially critical across Northern California's inland valleys. Without adequate airflow, attic temperatures can exceed 150 degrees during summer heat waves, dramatically shortening shingle life and forcing your air conditioning to work significantly harder. J Palace Construction ensures every roofing installation includes a properly balanced ventilation system sized for your specific attic space.
